I hope this isn't too off-topic for this forum, Scott, but do you think recordable optical discs generally have a shorter lifespan than their factory-pressed counterparts? If so, should I keep such discs out of direct sunlight even when they're in cases?

You would think that stamped discs would have a much longer life than recorded ones, but from the research that doesn't seem to be the case. Here are some excellent research papers and articles with more detail:

Note that the storage environment plays a huge part in longevity. Exposure to sunlight is probably one of the quickest ways to damage or destroy a disc.

I've read a little of the links you posted, but, in your opinion, what causes greater damage: heat or UV rays? Just so we're on the same page, I'm thinking specifically of leaving CD/DVDs in a case like this in a hot car or maybe one of those visor storage cases.

I could't say which is worse, but I would say that a hot car is one of the worst environments for them. Having them in a case would help, keeping them in an insulated cooler would help more. Scott.

I doubt anyone is going to do that. I picture a cooler full of beer and music/backups.

Another forum asked about M-Disk technology and that reminded me of this excellent collection of links discussing CD/DVD longevity. I thought I'd add the M-Disk links for completeness.
