Hello: In the 20th edition page 235 note pinout PCI slots is in tech ref. not on the disc. What I am trying to find out is PCI x1 card will work in a PCI slot or x4 x8 slot .

I think you are talking about PCI Express (PCIe) slots (p. 237 in the 20th ed.), which have replaced PCI in modern systems. PCIe cards will only work in PCIe slots, they will not fit or function in PCI slots. PCIe works as a serial point-to-point connection with 1 to 32 lanes. The physical PCIe slots may be x1, x4, x8, or x16. You can always put a PCIe card using fewer lanes into a slot offering more, meaning a PCIe x1 card will work in any PCIe slot from x1 through x16.
