Scott, is there a PATA/IDE hard drive with a 2.5-inch form factor that you would recommend in this day and age?

Unfortunately there isn't a lot to choose from. Which one I'd choose would depend on capacity and budget requirements. I usually try to avoid buying new drives like that (as you can see they are expensive) and instead re-use old drives from discarded old (recycled) systems. Recycled drives enable inexpensive repairs of older systems still in use. Scott.

Well, the hard drive that is currently in a certain laptop my dad recently bought is only 30GB.

Wow, expensive.

The BIOS indicates 2002-2004. Possible LBA-48 table was never added. If so max. is 128/137Mb capacity. You can install bigger drive but partition is limited. But since the 160's are $200 I'm guessing that is not a problem.

If you go with the used/refurb route you will want to go to F.25 on the BIOS to increase your chances the table was added.
