Scott, when the speed of a wireless Internet connection fluctuates dramatically despite signal strength that is generally excellent, could it be that there is something wrong with one's cable modem? I currently use an Xfinity cable modem/router. The speed of my wireless Internet connection is usuall 65.0 Mbps, but it too often drops down to 6.5 Mbps. Should I try using a WiFi range extender/signal booster before getting the cable modem replaced? I've reset the cable modem, and the speed still fluctuates.

Wireless connections fluctuate due to electromagnetic interference and other ambient conditions, that is the nature of the beast. You would have a much more consistent (and faster) connection via wired. Bottom line: I don't think there is anything wrong with the modem/router. Scott.

Would a WiFi range extender/signal booster be particularly helpful in my case?

In this case any additional step in the connection will only slow things down. Scott.

Scott, under what circumstances do you think it would be worth returning the Xfinity cable modem/router to Comcast in exchange for another one?

Only if the modem itself is defective, which I don't believe is the case in this situation. If the performance varied that much on a *wired* connection I might suspect that connection leading up to the device (i.e. Xfinity infrastructure) is defective or degraded. If I thougth that I'd probably initiate a service call so a technician could come out and test the lines. But I would not base that diagnosis on any wireless connections. Scott.

Scott, do you think this site is a good resource?

That is the speedtest page provided by Comcast. It is OK but has less than 30 test servers nationwide, meaning sometimes the results can be tainted by location or distance from the nearest server. I feel a better alternative is http://speedtest.net, which has more than 2,500 servers and offers the ability to compare your speeds to others, including those that use the same provider. Scott.
