Scott, is there a piece of particularly good software for checking hard drives that you would recommend in this day and age?

I always recommend starting with the drive manufacturer's own diagnostics, as they can often go deeper in checking specific drives. For example, when testing Seagate drives I start with SeaTools. Depending on the outcome after that I may or may not use some of the other tools included on the Ultimate Boot CD. Note that the UBCD also includes most if not all of the HDD mfr. diagnostics all in one place. Scott.

One thing I have noticed is that some systems don't care for booting off the UBCD or similar, so I keep an old desktop that boots the UBCD immediately.
