Scott, does the appearance of a bad sector qualify as a hard-drive failure in your book?

For modern drives, yes. Modern drives have spare sectors that are mapped in place of bad sectors when the drive is new. If any additional bad sectors appear I would consider the drive not trustworthy. Scott.
