Scott, what happens when I abruptly turn off a dock while an attached hard drive is still spinning or whatever? Can it cause premature wear to the drive?

It shouldn't cause any problems with the drive, however if you were writing any files at the time they may be corrupted or lost. Scott.

What if I was just trying to share the files on the hard drive over a network?

No problem as long as nothing was writing to the drive at the time of the shutdown. Scott.
