I am connecting an ASUS VS229H-P monitor to the integrated graphics video output of a Gigabyte GA-Z270-HD3 motherboard via HDMI.

The picture quality is excellent when it works but...

No HDMI cable is supplied with the monitor. If it were, perhaps there would be nothing weird in the world of HDMI.

The monitor is supplied with a VGA (ugh) and DVI cable but no HDMI cable. I believe that is because every HDMI cable sold requires a small licensing payment, so I get that. But here is the rub, I have discovered that not all HDMI cables are created equal!

Specifically, if the monitor is connected via HDMI to the PC's video system, some HDMI cables will bring the monitor out of standby upon boot while others will not. That is, the monitor will remain in standby (as indicated by the amber power LED) when the PC boots and no video will appear on the monitor screen. Other HDMI cables will signal the monitor to come out of standby to full operation (blue power LED) without issue.

I contacted ASUS Technical Support and got absolutely nowhere.

For now, it's hit-or-miss whether a cable will work or not; weird.

What's the secret sauce?

Usually issues like that are due to communication problems between the specific video source and the display, sometimes due to configuration settings (check BIOS Setup power management and video settings). If you have narrowed this down to cables then what are the specific cables that do or don't work correctly? Perhaps the cables that don't work correctly are defective, I recommend Monoprice for replacement cables. Scott.

Thank you for the reply Scott.

The behavior I described is based on solely swapping HDMI cables, nothing more. That said, I will recheck the UEFI settings as you suggest.

The cable that works properly is marked V1.3b, an older standard I know. I just happened to have it amongst my spares.

The cables that don't function properly are all new, no name from China, marked as High Speed with Ethernet.

Assuming that the cable is the sole issue, I'll try one from Monoprice and hope for the best.

At Scott's recommendation, I purchased HDMI cables from Monoprice.

The cables from Monoprice worked perfectly.

So much for cheap cables from China...
