my cousins acer laptop has a problem,
when logging on it asked for the windows vista basic key,
when the genuine key was entered, it said thats not the key,
she bought the laptop from a store a year ago, and cannot
remember if she has validated it, it may be a virus ?
as she uses facebook,
so i used killdisk to erase all the partitions i mistakenly
erased all the partitions,
i tried to install xp on it from disc, and got an error message,
saying try rebooting, if you get this screen again, chkdsk
it gives a long (lightblue screen error message) with chdsk on the end of it.
so i put the hard drive into a dock and formatted the two partitions, and
used the checkdisc in windows, put the hard drive back in the laptop,
now it tries to start then dies, can anyone help please .

now when i start up the machine the hard drive starts up twice,
then dies, i know this because i get a green square light twice,
on the lights below the screen,

and when i place the flat of my hand on the number pad area,
i can feel the hard drive spinning then stopping twice.

the screen remains black/dead , karl

Sounds like a bad hard drive. but more or less sounds like an Acer being an Acer - lol.

Do you have another hard drive you can try? And also were you even able to boot to the installation CD?

The hard drive is dead. just get a new one and a faster one. Make sure it is a sata hard drive an 2.5 inch. and then just reinstall the windows I'm not sure which version of windows it had on it windows xp or vista. you can call up acer and see if they well send you a copy of all the software that cam with the computer. But if she didin't back up here files then she lost them forever more like sol.
That is why scott and also myself telling people to back up there files because hard drives do die.
have fun.

If I were you I would test the hard drive first to be absolutely sure....Get the software from the specific manufacturer of the hard drive. Doesn't necessarily sound like a hard drive problem.

There is no OS on the hard drive so the hard drive has nothing to load, so what you describe sounds completely normal. Except for the absense of anything at all on the screen, it sounds normal. Try testing the hard drive with the hard drive manufactures software. Even if it is the hard drive you may be able to repair it with the manufactures software.

I'm not sure what elese to tell you but I will say wait to hear from Scott before blaming the hard drive. He is the one who has been doing this since he was a little tike!. He is the final word in pc and laptop repair.

Can you enter the BIOS Setup and change the SATA host adapter to Legacy (aka IDE or Compatibility) mode, which will eliminate the need for AHCI/RAID drivers (not included in factory XP install discs)? To do this on a ThinkPad, you would enter the BIOS etup by pressing the F1 key immediately after power on, then select Config, Serial ATA, and change the SATA Controller Mode Option from AHCI to Compatibility: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-65602

Unfortunately many new laptops are permanently set to AHCI mode, in which case you will need an XP install disc with integrated SATA AHCI/RAID drivers, else the install will fail as you describe.

Since Windows 7 and Vista have the AHCI/RAID drivers integrated, what happens when you install Vista or Windows 7 instead of XP? Scott.

Location: hedon, east yorkshire, england,
i get absolutely nothing on the screen scott, completely dead display,
(no f2 set up message in the bottom of the screen any longer) therefore
i cannot access the bios, on the acer aspire 5735z,

i could previously when the problem started,
taking the hard drive out putting it in a dock, and useing the
checkdisk utility, must have done something to the laptop,

i took the hard drive out again, put it in a dock ,it spins
constantly, and i can load folders to both partitions, and open them,

put it back in the laptop, same thing it tries to start twice,
all i get is a completely blank screen, thanks karl.
any suggestions gratefully received.

my geuss is when i used killdisk, or the ultimate boot cd,
i did not (properly know what i was doing) and have somehow,
possibly erased the bios,or partition with the drivers and hotfixes,
and when i took the ersased drive out to checkdisk it the bios
or erased partition has not reloaded, as i erased the acer partition karl,
when i originally installed (vistapremiun known good copy)over vista basic it was about three quarters of the loading bar through the installation, and it got stuck i left ,it for an hour but it stayed at the same point,
all that was moving was two (full stops) flashing
intermitently, at the end of the "vista is loading message"
can i perform some sort of master reboot or conect this laptop to
my pc somehow ( just a geuss thanks karl )

when i conect the hard disc to my pc it has two parts
both read 111 gb free of 111gb,

sounds as if i should have done what you say in the first place
and enter the BIOS Setup and change the SATA host adapter to Legacy (aka IDE or Compatibility) mode, which will eliminate the need for AHCI/RAID drivers (not included in factory XP install discs)?

Erasing the HDD or running CHKDSK or the UBCD will not physically damage the HDD, Laptop or the BIOS. If you cannot access the BIOS Setup and/or boot from a bootable CD with the hard drive removed, then it sounds like some other part of the laptop (motherboard, RAM, etc.) may be defective. You need to fix that before you can deal with the hard drive. Without a link to the mfr. support page or documentation for that system, I cannot offer any more specific information.

Once you have verified a working laptop, then you can verify that the HDD works by testing it on another system, including even a desktop with an adapter. From what you have described, it appears to me that you have already done that. Once both a working system and HDD are independently verifiied, then you can reinstall the hard drive, then boot from a Vista install disc and reload Vista from scratch.

I normally recommend that you follow the product recovery procedure to reinstall Vista from a potentially hidden partition on the HDD. However, if you fully erased the HDD the recovery partition may no longer be present, in which case you can obtain a product recovery disc from the manufacturer, or install Vista from an existing Vista OEM or Retail install disc. If you are using an OEM or Retail disc, then you will want to install the same version as listed on the Vista Certificate of Authenticity sticker found on the bottom of the laptop, and enter the product key found there as well. Scott.

i took the hard drive out as you advised ( bingo )

i can now get into the bios by pressing f2

do i now need to set the bios to boot from usb and load some sort of
drivers ? or recovery software from a flashdrive ,

i changed the bios to ide mode,

and put the hard drive back managed to get a
genuine xp pro disc into the drive,by quickly ejecting during power up,
nothing happened,it does the same as before
starts then restarts twice ( dead screen )

(acer aspire notebook 5735z) the below link does not take you to
the actual support page just the main support page, karl,

At this point it sounds like either your install disc and/or optical drive may be bad. Verify that the discs are readable in another system. If they are, then try connecting a known-good external USB optical drive, set it to first in the boot sequence, and then try installing the OS from the external drive.

You will not need AHCI/RAID drivers for XP if you successfully changed the SATA host adapter (controller) mode in the BIOS Setup to Legacy (IDE) mode. As a test, you could try installing Vista first, then XP. Scott.

Did you remember the AHCI/RAID drivers for XP that Scott recommended? With XP you can not install those drivers after the fact, so if you have a system and HDD that can take advantage of the AHCI/RAID performance and you want to then you might need to back up.

i enabled the ide in bios as scott said evan,xp pro loaded,
the original problem was the cd/dvd optical drive as
scott said not the hard drive,

i got a bootmgr is miising message,so i kept restarting with windows disc in drive,
even though it was "knocking" i finally got the press any key to boot from cd message,

as windows loaded the (drivers and firmware stuff) the knocking stopped,

i am typing this reply on the offending laptop, which now works fine,
fully validated updated ,ect,avg9,adobe,windows defender,ccleaner,

the original infestation on facebook must have affected the original,
log on screen for vista basic, and the cd/dvd drive firmware i geuss,

many thanks to everyone for helping and scott for the repair.

Well.. This thread made me realize once again that I am to quick to jump to conclusions. I think that is my 1 flaw I have with computer repair. Nonetheless, I am trying to work out of it.

As long as you stay quiet, test whether your conclusion was right or wrong, then it is just a hypothesis. After you find the *corre,ct* hypothesis (ideally your 1st one) then you've come up with your conclusion. That way you only have *one* correct conclusion. <g>

thanks shane,
this post has now ended,
my cousin is happy, she is coming,
up from london soon, to pick it up,
so i have had chance to play with it,
quick review, 0 OUT OF 100, in my opinion,
mass produced for a certain market,
save up and buy buy a thinkpad, easier and cheaper to repair,
personally i dont like laptops, i cant find my cellphone half the time,
lenovo thinkpads cost 30% more initially but the costs are recouperated
with spares and repairs
thanks to scotts wonderfull dvd`s and books,
the laptop cd/dvd was trying to boot ( not the hard drive )
scott`s experience pointed me in the right direction,
and after a little persuasion i managed the repair.
