Looking at this laptop for a friend, trying to figure out what's up with it, and need a tip.

When I power it on, all the lights come on, the fan comes on, but nothing more.

It does not appear to access from the HD, there is no LCD activity, nothing on an external CRT, and NO beeps, so I don't think it is getting to POST properly.

I don't have a spare to swap parts out from, and don't want to start buying parts to try to fix this machine. Is there something that I can remove that will give me a hint as to where to proceed next? If it's a mobo, would it be likely to be both mobo and CPU or just one or the other, and is there some way to narrow it down?

Thanks.

First try removing the battery and running the system off the AC adapter alone. Verify that the AC adapter is good (try a known-good spare, or verify that the existing adapter works with another system).

If that doesn't help, then it is time for some real bare-bones dead-system troubleshooting. Basically this means removing any and all non-essential components to see if the system has basic functionality. This would include removing all drives, all memory except 1 module, any internal miniPCI or PCIe cards, etc. I'd even go so far as to disconnect the keyboard and virtually anything else plugged into the motherboard.

If the system won't POST in that state, then try replacing the memory module with a known-good spare. If it still doesn't work, then try removing and reinstalling the processor. If that doesn't help, then most likely the motherboard has failed. Let me know what you find, Scott.

No luck with anything here.

Have narrowed it down to either the CPU or the motherboard.

Any way to determine for sure which one it might be?

I will have a spare with a broken screen to test with, so all I will really need do
is swap screens and hard drives and I will be good to go. However, I would like
to narrow this down.

If the CPU is bad, would it fry the motherboard in the other PC if I put it in there?
If the CPU in the spare laptop is good, and the motherboard in the one that I have
is bad, will it fry the CPU if I try it in there?

Just wondering if CPU's can fry motherboards, or motherboards can fry CPU's and
vice/versa. I like to get things solved.

The laptop that I ended up finding just so happens to be exactly like the one I need
to fix, only it has a cracked screen and no hard drive, so all I have to do is swap the
screen and hard drive to have a working laptop for my friend.

Thanks,

Swap one or the other with a known-good spare.

While I suppose that is theoretically possible, it is highly unlikely. Scott.
