Scott, I'm working on an HP nc4400 laptop (without internal optical drive) that will not power on with a fully charged battery: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quic ... 8_div.HTMLThis unit will power up with AC adapter and DC plug inserted, AND with AC adapter and battery attached. It will remain on when DC plug is removed and battery left in, and will remain on. Trying to start on battery only will not work. I suspect that the power circuit connector and/or printed circuit connections on the system board are involved, and that I am looking at a tear down to the mother board. ( I can use it this way when near an AC outlet, but....?). I'd appreciate your suggestions. Walt

Laptop batteries are very failure prone and even under the best conditions only last 2 to 3 years at the most. With that in mind along with the symptoms you describe, I suspect the battery is failing. What happens when you replace it with a known-good spare? Scott.

Scott, Before sending in this post, I had ordered another battery. I just tried the second battery and the results are the same, which now leads me to suspect: system board (printed circuit connections); the DC plug input jack, located rear left; the 'power on/off' switch located on the left side, forward; and the chassis battery jack, located on the right side but underneath.

I would inspect the jacks internally to see if there are any problems you can see. In some cases the jacks can be replaced or repaired. If they are part of the motherboard and look to be intact, then unfortunately the board itself may be bad. Scott.

I appreciate your reply. It does look like a problem with the board. I'll have to decide whether to go the far. I've never done that, and it would be a great experience. Thanks again. WL
