My HP dv9008nr is only supposed to support 2 GB of memory (1 GB x2) http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu ... ct=3253948. I put 4 GB (2 GB x2) for a laptop that no longer powers up. Now, The BIOS reports 4096 MB (4 GB) of RAM but Windows 7 64 bit only shows 2.5 GB available memory. Should I just leave it at 2 GB and call it a day?

What does Windows report when there is only 2GB installed? Scott.

In that case it appears that the extra memory beyond 2GB is in fact being used. Note that when 4GB is installed, the system (chipset) reserves most of the 4th GB for hardware addressing, and then you have the built-in video stealing another half-GB or so, which is why you end up with Windows recognizing 2.5GB of the 4GB total. Since Windows 7 can use the extra ~0.5GB I'd leave the 4GB installed, unless you have a better use for it elsewhere. Scott.

Not in this case. You might be thinking about Vista. Scott.
