Don't know if this forum deals with Macs at all but our charity gets so many requests for laptops that I want to try and fix an iBook G4 if I can. It powers up, doesn't boot to the OS, shows the Apple logo, then a black square in the center of the screen. I'm thinking a bad inverter or backlight but I'm not that experienced with laptops. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Try a factory restore, it's on google for your model

If it were a bad inverter or backlight you wouldn't see anything. In addition to the factory restore as suggested by David you could also try booting from an OS install disc (or other bootable disc such as a Linux distro) to see if the system itself is functional. Scott.
