I'm curious if the fan always being on in my T61 is normal or not. It appears to have three fan settings; low, mid, and high. Shortly after booting up, it will go from low to mid fan speed, and then almost always remains at mid. The CPU temps are fine, 42C and 43C respectively are normal readings. The GPU ranges from ~54C to very low 60s under load. It lives in a port replicator with a dual-monitor setup. I'm not sure if I'm being more sensitive to the noise, if the new fan assembly is simply noisier than the previous one, or if something is wrong with it. Thanks.

I do believe it is normal for the fan to be running at all times, especially on systems with discrete video. You should be able to change the power management settings to have it run more at low speed, but it should always be spinning. Scott.

If the thermal grease is still curing, could this cause the fan to be on a higher speed? Thanks.

Standard grease has no curing time. Phase-change material (only used by OEMs, not individuals) will melt and flow the first time it is taken above the phase-change temperature. After that it will perform optimally. Scott.

The old thermal device and fan was a Furukawa, and the new one is a Toshiba. Is the Toshiba known as being noisier of the two, or are they the same? Thanks.

They should be the same. The T61 was one of the first ThinkPad laptops equipped with the innovative "Silent Owl Blade" fan. Lenovo often uses multiple suppliers for a given component (such as a fan), however they would all have to use the identical Lenovo design and achieve equal levels of performance. That being said there may be slight variations in any two fans, even from the same manufacturer. Scott.

That's puzzling, because the fan definitely does not resemble http://blog.lenovo.com/images/legacy/fi ... -Blade.jpg. The top is flat, while downward facing portion is concave with a horizontal outer ring between the top and bottom of the fan blade. The sweep of the blade is different, and there is no nubby thing at the end of the blade.

Also, the heatsink assemblies are not identical. The Toshiba uses two heatpipes, while the Furukawa has three. Also, the Toshiba heatsink assembly appears to have copper heatsinks above the GPU, while the Furukawa has what seems to be aluminum.

Interesting, it seems that Lenovo gave them a little freedom in meeting the specifications. Aluminum spreaders likely required an additional heat pipe to offer the same performance as the copper spreaders. I would assume at least that the fan blades look similar to each other, if not exactly like the diagram shown on the Lenovo Blog site. Scott.

The Furukawa's additional heatpipe is over the CPU, so there's two heatpipes over the CPU and only one over the GPU and its aluminum spreaders.
