What do you think usually provides a stronger connection, Scott?

It mostly depends on the location of the device and the antenna, and that favors the USB attached devices. For example a USB based wireless card can be placed high up and the end of a cable, and those devices can often have external antennas which work very well. Scott.

Is there a wireless network USB adapter that you would particularly recommend for laptops, Scott?

For maximum performance and range I would recommend one of these: http://www.radiolabs.com/products/wirel ... -cards.php

Scott.

No offense, but the prices of those products are quite steep. Would something like this be OK?

Sure, but that would offer the least range and performance possible, especially if directly plugged into a USB port on a system. Scott.

I have one of these and it works quite well, and it gives superb range:

The initial question was what would provide a *stronger* signal. The problem with adapters like that are the antennas. They are so small and when plugged in to a USB port on a system are partially shielded by the body of the system. Depending on the position of the access point it can mean that the entire metal body of the system is in the way. In that case the range and performance can be greatly improved by attaching the adapter to the end of a USB extension cable such that it can be placed above and away from the system in order to allow a more direct signal path to the access point. Of course if the access point is close enough then any differences will be negligible. Scott.

My response to that would be no different than my previous post. Let me know how it works for you. Scott.

I've been using a Linksys WUSB100 with a certain desktop PC of mine for over two years now. It has generally worked out well for me. I can't say the same stuff about the software that came with it, though.
