I received a laptop from a user who says they didn't do anything to damage the monitor. Obviously something happened but what causes this type of spherical damage?

Very interesting, that looks like some sort of physical (possibly impact) damage, but that is just a guess. Scott.

No one here has ever seen that kind of damage. I was hoping you might. I guessed stacking something heavy on the closed laptop that was smaller? If you press on the screen in the black areas it acts like it's just a dead pixel (except huge and round) and the color gets distorted around the black but the black doesn't spread.

Any other ideas? Anything I do to figure out what is going on?

The only thing to figure out at this point is whether to replace the screen, or use it as a desktop system with an external screen, or use it as a server with no screen, or toss it in the trash. Let me know the outcome, Scott.

It's under warranty but I don't think Lenovo covers this. We have at least several hundred of these ThinkPad T 530s here so it will most likely become parts if Lenovo says nope to warranty. I was hoping you would say something other than physical damage could cause that.
