Is there much risk that a new USB floppy disk drive won't work properly with Linux (it happens it would be be on a laptop)? USB itself is supported by the OS or firmware; I use it for flash drives. I successfully read from a borrowed LaCie USB FDD under Porteus Linux (probably version 1.1). I found a retailer, usually trustworthy, selling a USB FDD with a Mitsumi chipset but without stating a brand for the whole drive (http://www.computernyc.com/sup12med.html) and they didn't answer my email asking about OS compatibility, but if it'll likely work I'll probably buy it. I'm just hoping that it's not a hardware type that is often Windows-only. Thank you for advice.

It should work, but it all depends on the drivers. Even if it didn't work initially, you might be able to edit the driver .inf files to add support for the specific drive in question. Scott.
