Hi Scott,

What could you focus on when you are purchasing a good laptop for 2014?
Thanks, Kit.

Before Scot answers I'd recommend also considering a comfortable track-pad, keyboard and display.

I don't have a specific one in mind, more I was advising to try them out at a retail store to see the differences in the quality of the Keyboard, Track-pad and Display.

For example some high end Latops have a high resolution display which is nice, but means font sizes can be very small for the elderly or partially sighted.

Number one for me is a matte display with an LED backlight, glossy screens act like a mirror and make the system unusable in all but dark rooms. Number two is a TrackPoint pointing device, which pretty much excludes all other brands except ThinkPad. Other requirements such as size, power, features and of course cost depend on the intended use and of course the budget as well. Scott.

Thanks Scott. I knew your favorite modal - ThinkPad. What resolution are you looking at with a Thinkpad matte display with an LED backlight? I'm looking at i5? How is that? Kit.

If I were going to purchase a system today it would be a T540p. I'd configure it with an i7 quad-core processor and a 1920x1080 display: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/th ... ies/t540p/

I normally configure and order my own systems with the minimum available RAM and HDD options as I can upgrade those upon receipt of the unit for much less than Lenovo would charge. In that case I'd install an additional 4GB of RAM (for a total of 8GB) and a 480GB or larger SSD immediately upon arrival. I'd also save money by ordering the system with Windows 8.1 as they charge an additional $50 for Windows 7 and I already have a retail license for Windows 7 Pro I would install immediately. For others I generally recommend ordering the system fully configured with RAM, SSD and Windows 7 pre-installed as that way everything is covered by a single warranty and it would be ready for use upon arrival. Scott.
