Before buying I'd want to know the exact model number so I could look it up in the PSREF to verify the specs. By that I mean things like the screen resolution, type of WiFi card included, etc. I'd also want assurance that the BIOS and HDD are not locked with a password. Finally I'd like to see a picture showing the proper Windows COA (Certificate Of Authenticity = license) is attached. Scott.

There is a method of retrieving the password with a soldered chip, but it's not trivial

Thanks Scott, I've seen other ads on there for a windows vista or 7 coa sticker with a stick of ram or any part from a laptop. They're selling these stickers for about $10 - $40 can you use these to put that os legally on a laptop that originally had XP? There's a guy at the flea market near me selling laptops for about $140 he told me he sold about sixty of them so there's money in old laptops ..

If a laptop doesn't have the coa sticker are you basically screwed? Or can you call microsoft and explain that your coa sticker is unreadable?

You would have to contact Microsoft to be sure, but I believe that once the key is unreadable I think it is useless (unless you wrote down the key in advance). That is why most laptop mfrs. moved the COA from the base of the system to the inside of the battery compartment. When mounted on the base the stickers would quickly become damaged. Scott.
