A recent debate about a photo of a dress as being either blue and black or white and gold (see http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/28/busin ... hs-in.html and http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2015 ... .html?_r=0 both as accessed 3-12-15) might have another consideration: If I look at the photo through my laptop's screen from a normal angle, I see it as unequivocally blue and black, but if I look at it from a sharp angle, effectively from above the top at about 60 degrees from the perpendicular, it can become white and gold. From below the bottom the effect is ambiguous and from leftward or rightward the colors remain as seen from the perpendicular. I assume the effect from above is an artifact of the type of monitor technology my debranded laptop uses. The problem with this explanation is the sheer percentage of people who commented on a website that the dress is white and gold, and I have a hard time imagining that most of them were holding the monitor at that direction and angle. Could other devices have a similar effect even when viewed from nearer to the perpendicular? If so, this might affect website design, and I'm asking here in pursuit of technology expertise. Thanks.

The design and settings of both cameras and monitors have a huge effect on how colors appear. CRTs are considered much more accurate color-wise than LCD displays, but proper calibration helps considerably: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... ur-display

BTW, the infamous dress was in fact Blue and Black: http://www.dogonews.com/2015/3/6/white- ... ess-debate
