Scott,

Do you think this is a good deal?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00W4AMWCI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

I'm looking to buy another thinkpad, but don't have a lot of money to spend. I looked at the Lenovo outlet, but didn't see anything similarly priced.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Paul

Actually I think that is an excellent deal, especially with it being a Certified Refurbished unit and with free shipping. In addition the T420 was one of the last models made before Lenovo screwed up the TrackPoint and keyboard. I would have no problems recommending that unit. Scott.

I just order one of these and this is for the person that post this

You can see the processor specs here: http://ark.intel.com/products/52229/Int ... o-3_20-GHz

According to the specs that is a dual-core processor with Hyper-Threading Technology, which makes it appear as 4 cores to the OS. Scott.

Spiderman - yes I did get one and I'm happy with it. It arrived quickly, came well-packaged, and appears in great condition. I like the fact that it came with absolutely no crapware. In any case, I upgraded to an SSD drive by cloning the hard drive with this device:

and so far it runs like a charm.

I almost purchased the 4GB RAM version for $269 instead. Again, I'm satisfied with the purchase.

That is a personal preference issue. Higher resolution is generally better since you get more desktop real-estate (especially desirable if you often run multiple apps/windows), but the higher number of pixels per inch results in smaller icons and text on-screen. Some of this can be tweaked via Windows and application settings, but that isn't always possible and can be a bit of extra work to implement. For that reason I normally like to run with default settings where possible.

As an example my current laptop has a 15.6" screen with 1600x900 resolution and I like it, however due to my eyesight changing with age I sometimes have to use reading glasses to see it clearly. I would not accept that resolution on the smaller 14.0" screen on a T4xx for example (I would need bifocals or reading glasses all the time), and some people might not want it even with a 15.6" display. Scott.

Yes, I am fine in that regard. It is normal for eyesight to move more farsighted as one ages, which makes it more difficult to clearly see high resolution computer screens close-up.

Both of those are equivalent resolutions, only the aspect ratios are slightly different. 1280x800 (WXGA) is 16:10 while 1366x768 (WXGA-HD) is 16:9.

Note that 1366x768 on a 14.0" display is 112 pixels per inch (PPI), which is basically the same as the 116 PPI from 1600x900 on a 15.6" display. In my experience any PPI higher than that requires young eyes with excellent vision. Scott.

I believe there are 2 SO-DIMM sockets (no memory is soldered-in) and the maximum supported is 8GB (two 4GB modules): https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd015734

I just wanto to point something out here about the hard drive in this T420

4 inches
Processor Intel Core i5
RAM 8 GB SO-DIMM DDR3
Hard Drive 320 GB HDD 5400 rpm
Wireless Type 802.11bgn
Expand
Other Technical Details
Brand Name Lenovo
Series Thinkpad T420
Hardware Platform PC
Operating System Windows 7;
Item Weight 4.5 pounds
Item Dimensions L x W x H 13.50 x 1.20 x 8.80 inches
Color Black
Computer Memory Type DDR3 SDRAM

There hard drive says it is a 320gb hard drive the speed of that drive is not 5400RPM it is 7200 RPM even better. Just that to let you know I did the crystal disk info and it shows the RPM 7200. Just a thought in cause anyone want to get one of these awesome T40 laptop computers or get yourself one of those crappy dell laptops lol <g>
