What kind of AC adapter would be suitable for an HP EliteBook 2540p Notebook PC? Would an AC adapter with an output of 19V and 4.74A be OK?

Not Scott, but I believe I remember Scott saying that when you purchase a replacement AC Adapter for a laptop it should be direct from the manufacturer.

Let me know what it says in the system documentation under the voltage and power requirements. That should tell you what you need. You can get an adapter capable of supplying more power, which will generally run cooler and last longer, but not one capable of supplying less power than the system requires. Higher quality universal adapters are pretty good, but the OEM units are generally best. Scott.

According to this manual, the operating voltage is 19.0 V dc @ 3.5 A - 65 W. The operating current is 3.5 A.

In that case the answer to your first question would be yes. Scott.
