Or so the Inq says: http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/ ... 84-g86-bad. Bad news, my ThinkPad has a G86-based GPU...

If you do have problems, let me know how Lenovo resolves them. From past experiences, their support is among the best. Scott.

I hope that I don't, but I guess this does give me an incentive not to immediately sell the T61 (which I think will have integrated graphics) UMN Law is forcing me to buy. A silver lining, apparently.

Bad nVidia G84s and G86s are apparently popping up in ten Dell laptop models, with Dell issuing a "fix" that merely turns on the laptop's cooling fans to always on mode: http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/ ... ive-nvidia

Reports of G92s and G94s failing, and one account states that Dell is swapping out entire laptops due to massive nVidia GPU failures: http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/ ... reportedly

Nvidia GPU Settlement Reveals All Affected Notebooks

by Paul Lilly
Maximum PC
Oct. 1, 2010

Remember that big brouhaha over Nvidia's notebook GPUs failing at an "abnormal rate" due to a manufacturing defect? It was never entirely clear exactly how many models were affected, until now. As part of a settlement in a class-action lawsuit, Nvidia has agreed to compensate affected owners of certain Apple, Dell, and HP/Compaq models, including repairs of the defective chip, providing a replacement notebook of equal value, or reimbursing for repairs, depending on the model you purchased. Verily, although now I'm curious as to why they aren't. Superior cooling subsystems?

Its because they are better designed than any other brand of laptop on the market. I've tried other brands of laptops before and compared to a Thinkpad, they all seem like childrens toys.

Sony either didn't litigate, didn't settle, or is litigating somewhere else, such as Japan.

Had this prob recently with a Sony Laptop, the customer ended up sending it away for re-soldering, and so far so good, the Sony centre (despite him buying all this entertainment there) were not interested past the 12-month warranty.
