Hi Scott (and everyone else)...
I have a question about certifications (sorry, didn't know where else to post this). I'm going to be moving forward with obtaining a certification - either MCDST or A+. Problem is, I don't know which one is more valued within the industry. I see a lot of jobs that are requesting an A+ certification, but would the MCDST be just as valuable when job-hunting (I'm currently unemployed - laid off due to staff reduction 5 months ago)?
Thanks in advance!
David

A+ is probably the most basic first certification that one should have. It is the basis upon which all others can build. Scott.

That bring a new question. Where would be the best place to take the test. It hard to trust online sites that say get your A+ cert here. To me it sounds Fake antivirus scans. What I been doing is studying the A+ certs book and if I need more detail info I use upgrading and repairing books Depending on the Known topic. If I need to know more about Servers I would use upgrading and repairing servers.

You cannot take the test online, so those sites would indeed be scams. As it says here: CompTIA certification exams are provided through Pearson VUE and Prometric. Visit their sites to find the closest testing center to you.
Scott.

As Scott stated the " + " exams are foundational. For example a person who was perusing networking may Take A+ and Net+ and then branch into something less broad and more specific like a Cisco Cert.
My plan is to go A+ Net+ ( maybe Security +) and CCNA

There's also the ETA certifications, although I've never seen any want ads asking for the CST (Computer Service Technician) certification. The ETA is legitimate and well known. I wonder why thier computer repair certificate is not nearly as famous as the A+. URPC's is the ETA recommended book to study for the CST. http://www.eta-i.org/

John, at the school I go to there is a program that teaches the electrical engineering side of electronics. They mess around with bread boards and test devices. Nonetheless, I had never heard of the ETA degree either, but when I clicked the link you provided I recognized their emblem, for the class room for this telecommunications/electronics program has that symbol on a big banner outside the door. I guess thats the certification that teacher is trying to get his students to get. Here is a link to the school program I am speaking of. http://www.hindscc.edu/Departments/tele ... fault.aspx

Since we are on the subject I have a question about getting prepared for a certification test.
Lets say I have finished reading my certification prep book what would be the next steps I would take to get ready other than practice exams? I would like to know other ideas to practice other than practice exams because after a few rounds with a practice exam one starts to remember the questions. Of course the point is to remember the answers to the questions, but it can get redundant.
Thanks in Advanced.

The next step is to just take the test. If you fail (you won't), at that point you will have an idea of what areas to work on for the next time. Scott.

Thanks, I feel like I could pass the exam now. Every practice exam I take I pretty much get every question right. I just want to be sure I am ready.
Thanks for for the info.

Windows Vista and earlier are covered in the latest (2009 version) of the CompTIA A+ test. Windows 7 is not included at all. See the actual objectives for more information: I still have a few discounted copies of my A+ book available. Scott.
