Scott I added a new hard drive to my computer,

http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&prod_no=232&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=171&cat3_no=6

I put the second hard drive on Sata port 5 which uses the Silicon Image controller,

http://download2.msi.com/files/downloads/mnu_exe/E7220v1.0.zip

Anyway, after adding it and formating it, the drive is marked as Active. I don't remember selecting this and thought that the "active" partition was the partition the system booted off of.

I spent about 1/2 hour of Google Searches on this, but there really isn't much more to it than,

There can only be one Active partition per disk and it typically contains the Operating system files and it makes it bootable.

Thats all I got from my search anyway. In disk management, I see,

C: Healthy(System)

D: Healthy (Active)

And if course my optical drives....

So is this normal, I haven't added an extra hard to any of my computers in a long time. So I don't know if I never noticed this before, or if it isn't normal....

What you describe is completely normal. Only one partition can (and should) be marked Active (bootable). Normally every drive will have an Active partition, however only the first one of those listed in the BIOS Setup boot sequence will actually boot the system. For more information on Partitioning and Partition types, I recommend reading Chapter 10 (Windows File Systems) in my book Upgrading and Repairing Windows. Scott.

Thanks a lot Scott for your help!. I'll be sure and read that chapter as of course I have that book. By the way I'm waiting for another special deal on your book that comes out today!

Well for some reason I thought it came out today, but I just looked on Amazon and now it says the 21st!. I was almost positive it did say the 4th of December a week or two ago....Also it says its a paperback edition?. All the others U&R PCS are hardcover, what gives?
