Hi Scott,

A customer brought me a HP Pavillion a6200n desktop that won't boot. His wife tried a partial system recovery then got cold feet and pulled the plug after it started. I don't know what else they did.

I cannot access the hidden partition from the splash screen. F2 gets me to setup just fine. F12 gets me the boot order just fine. F11 doesn't do anything. It won't load the restore GUI, it just continues to look for an OS and doesn't find one.

Is there any way to get the hidden restore partition to initialize a restoration without going through the F11 procedure?

Hey Randy, maybe your not pressing F11 enough, or not timing it correctly. You might have to order recovery discs if the owner did not already make them. Either that or use an OEM Dvd. I doubt that they actually deleted the recovery partition.

Stab in dark stuff,

1, check physical HDD (not much point in doing more if HDD is shot)

2, Some boot discs "for some reason" load the recovery partition not the main partition (I think this is a "nice" bug!

3, I know it's boring but I really do "start again" with this kind of thing, All the best, I'm not Mr Fix-it at the moment.

I need some hammer therapy, I'll check the security of the head and not let up till the head becomes "insecure"

How do you know it is even still there? Even if it is, I'd charge more to recover it than the cost of a new copy of Windows, which they don't need anyway. It could easily have been deleted, or if they replaced the HDD it is not there for sure. Install from an OEM disc and use the COA key (new Windows license not required), after a telephone activation all will be well. Scott.

"All is well", that's it? That's all we get? I hate stories without endings! <g> Scott.

"All is well" in computer speak to me is throwing it out the window. I only wonder what floor it was thrown from and how cool the impact was (concrete, grass, etc...) <g>

Scott said to install from an OEM disc and use the COA key (new Windows license not required), after a telephone activation all will be well. I did it and all is well. Locating and downloading the hotfixes and drivers was all that was left to do. I love happy customers.

I always like to know how things turn out. Thanks for letting us know, and I'm glad the ending was a happy one. Scott.
