Scott, if I have to perform an in-place upgrade of Windows XP due to HAL issues, does it matter if the installation disc used is Professional or Home Edition as long as the motherboard involved has only one processor? If the hard drive involved has Home Edition installed, can I use a Windows XP Professional installation disc as long as there is only one processor used in the motherboard involved?

The number of processors has nothing to do with it. You must use the same edition for an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) as what is currently on the system. See the following article for more information: How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP. Scott.
