Hello Scott, for my sins have been given a Vista Machine to repair, the hardware checks out but alas Vista will not start, even in safe mode

Quickly realized I need to reinstall Windows Vista, however the small company that made the machine has *not* attached the Vista COA.....

I have sometimes seen small companies around here that do this, not because the software is pirated but to try and keep future work to them selves (I assume they keep the COA stickers and match them to the customer)

Vista will somewhat start, but only gets as far the standard white mouse-cursor on a black screen, even in safe mode so my normal method of key retrieval software does not work!

Is there any way to extract the COA code from the remains of the installation?

David :)

**should point out this is a custom build desktop PC, it is not an OEM system

I previously answered that question here. Either of the programs I recommended should be able to show you the key used during the previous installation. Scott.

Thank you Scott,

I was unable to obtain the key using Softkey Revealer, Is there more I need to know to use it for a connected disk rather than the live system?

The other tool I recommended (Nirsoft ProduKey) can read the key out of the registry from another operating system on the same computer (meaning one you haven't booted from) by using the /regfile parameter. Scott.

I'm told the book is at the printer, should be available any day now! Scott.
