When attempting to remove an account from the Administrators group, I receive the error message "The specified account name is not a member of the group." I don't recall having left that account as a member of Administrators. Ideas? Thanks.

That's what the error is saying. The account is a member of another group.

It that is not the case, then what happens when you turn off User Account Control? Scott.

Disabled UAC, and the account can control everything without any prompts or requests to run as a new user.

When I view the Administrators Group, it displays as empty, despite other uses being members of it.

I believe this behavior was likely caused by someone (else) using Offline NT Password and Registry Editor to tamper with the SAM, elevating a normal user to admin. This behavior is listed in its FAQ at http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/. Will SysKey, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310105, protect the SAM from such attacks, and are there any other alternative methods of securing the SAM? Thanks.

I haven't tested SysKey but I don't think it will prevent the removal of the password. I recommend you test it and report on what you find. According to Laws 1-3 of the 10 Immutable Laws of Security, if a bad guy can run their program on your computer, alter the OS, and have unrestricted physical access, then "it's not your computer anymore". <g> Scott.
