Scott, is there a computer program that can detect whether or not a certain optical disc is copy-protected? I don't want to violate the DMCA just so I can make a backup copy.

There are several programs that can detect optical disc copy protection. However, I have not used many of them myself so I cannot give any specific recommendations. Scott.

How about programs that specifically detect APS and CSS? Those are the ones I'm really concerned about right now.

Check out the list of programs I linked to in my previous post. Let me know what you find. Scott.

I have the PC version of Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood. A notice on the outer cover reads: "This game contains technology intended to prevent copying that may conflict with some CD-RW, DVD-RW, and virtual drives." (Click here and here for some...interesting stuff.) Is there a way to find out whether or not a particular drive I have will be negatively impacted by the copy protection?

Copy protection is a software function that will have no permanent physical effect on the drive. Scott.

I haven't installed the software in question. Should I just get rid of it? After all, it seems to me like StarForce is pretty nasty stuff.

I can't tell you what to do, but personally I'm not much of a gamer and I try to boycott copy protected software wherever possible. Scott.
