Scott, a certain PC I have that has an XP installation too often won't go into Hibernate mode automatically. I usually have to do something like apply a new power scheme in order for the PC to do so again. After a few times of going into Hibernate mode automatically using a certain power scheme, the PC too often won't do so. I have disabled Java Quick Starter, but the problem still persists. Keep in mind that I have no problem manually putting the PC into Hibernate mode.

That's usually caused by software that is running in the background preventing Windows from being idle. You could use tools like Process Explorer and Autoruns to selectively end or disable suspect programs or processes to see which one might be the cause. Let me know what you find, Scott.

I've downloaded both Process Explorer and Autoruns. How do I use either one of them to determine which programs and/or processes are suspect?

You would first use Process Explorer to identify processes that are running and selectively kill any that you suspect might be interfering with the timed suspend. It will be up to you to decide what is suspicious or not, and experiment. After you kill a suspect process, with the suspend timer set for 1 minute see if the system suspends after 1 minute of inactivity. Keep trying different processes until you find the one that is interfering with your timed suspend. For help using Process Explorer I highly recommend this tutorial and the "Case of the Unexplained" videos produced by Mark Russinovich (author of the program).

Once you have identified the problematic process, assuming it isn't an important one you could use Autoruns to deselect it, which would prevent it from running everytime the system starts. Scott.

Keep in mind that after I apply a new power scheme, usually the PC will initially go into Hibernate mode automatically after the first few periods of use, but it doesn't seem to do so after them.

I'd check to see if any different or additional processes are running when it fails vs. when it works. It could be something like malware as well. Scott.

My Usual Power Scheme

Turn off monitor: Either "After 3 mins" or "After 5 mins"
Turn off hard disks: After 10 mins
System standby: After 30 mins
System hibernates: After 45 mins

I've done some testing using two different power schemes.

Test Power Scheme 1

Turn off monitor: After 3 mins
Turn off hard disks: Never
System standby: After 1 min
System hibernates: After 2 mins

Test Power Scheme 2

Turn off monitor: After 3 mins
Turn off hard disks: Never
System standby: Never
System hibernates: After 1 min

I had not killed any processes before I tested the latter two powers schemes several times (four times?) apiece. Maybe I should've tested them even more times, but the system went into standby mode and/or went into hibernation. I have gone back to what is essentially my usual power scheme and killed a suspect process. Let's see what happens.

Scott, is Steam known to be malware? I have killed the process, but it doesn't seem to be the one that's causing the problem.

Steam isn't malware. Scott.

Here's what I've observed: With My Usual Power Scheme, the PC in question will never go into Standby mode automatically, but it will automatically hibernate. When I was using Test Power Scheme 1, the PC always went into Standby mode automatically and then went into Hibernate mode automatically. Could the time lengths be a factor?

I couldn't say without knowing what they were, but I doubt it. Perhaps the entries for your usual scheme are corrupted, in which case you should just delete it and create a new one that works. Scott.

You mean look up. <g> I don't believe the time lengths have anything to do with it. Scott.

I've had at least one instance lately where the PC in question went into hibernation roughly an hour after it was supposed to. What could be the reason for this?

It sounds like one or more applications, programs or processes are preventing the system from entering Standby/Sleep mode. Let me know if you identify the culprit(s). Scott.
