Scott,
I've been getting long start-up times for WinXP mode too. This has been going on since the first time I installed XP Mode and the first time I ran it before installing any programs at all.
Also, sometimes I get a password prompt to log into XP mode using an XSP account. Other people on the net have said they have the same problem and there seems to be no consensus on how to properly fix it. Most of the time it just starts up (slowly) with no problems but from time to time I am asked to log in. None of my passwords seem to work when this happens.
One blogger wrote that using a different VM than the one Microsoft provides with Win XP Mode might make a difference in WinXP Mode startup times as well as the occasional demand for an unknown password to some XSP account.
Could you recommend a free/low cost VM substitute to the one Microsoft provides? I'd like to see if it makes a difference.

I've been running XP in the free without any problems. I would also recommend the free . Let me know what you end up using and how well it works. Scott.

I downloaded Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 SP1. Now how do I get Windows XP mode into it?
I've got the 470 MB file for Windows XP Mode but when I try to install it, it wants to install the standard Virtual Machine first. I assumed the VM and WinXP Pro were two different files and that I would be able to install them separately but apparently Microsoft combined them into one file.

I believe you would simply attach the XP Mode VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) to Virtual PC 2007. To do this copy the VHD from the Windows XP Mode program files directory (%ProgramFiles%\Windows XP Mode\Windows XP Mode base.vhd). After copying the VHD, remove the read-only attribute from the file, then create a VM that uses it. Scott.

It didn't work. Apparently the VM that Microsoft provides with the Windows XP Mode package is specially designed (in the VM's BIOS) to activate the Windows XP Pro automatically. The BIOS in Microsoft VM for PC 2007 SP1 does not do this. I used the telephone activation method when it asked for the product key and the mechanical voice told me that my copy of Windows was illegal and that I should return it to the vendor I got it from (which was Microsoft!).
Other people on the net had the same problem and that's just the way Microsoft engineered Windows XP Mode. Otherwise people could download WinXP Mode and run it for free on a VM. I guess my best option is to run a decent VM and install a registered version of XP Pro on it.

Thanks for letting me know the outcome. Unfortunately this sounds like another case of activation foiling the legitimate use of a product. Hopefully MS will and provide free downloads plus disable the activation servers for XP and Office 2003 once they are .
