Article says "By the way, you can safely turn off your system simply by pressing the power button on the computer and holding it down for five seconds or so. Just make sure to close any open files and programs first."

This is very wrong! That action (5-second press) would often invoke the ACPI style (hard) shutdown!

You can press it (the power button) once and it will likely goto sleep/standby unless options are configured in the Power control panel

Recommending a forced shutdown as a normal way of turning a system off shows a lack of understanding by the author. Forced shutdowns should only be done if the system has locked up or there is some sort of emergency. File system damage can occur if a forced shutdown is done at the wrong time, such as when writing to the disk. I would recommend seeking out better sources of more useful information. Scott.
