Scott, do you generally recommend the 32-bit version of Windows 7 Professional over the 64-bit version for most end-users? When would the 64-bit version be appropriate?

For any hardware that can't run the 64-bit version the choice is made for you. Since most hardware can run either, the choice is a question of applications, memory and convenience.

Applications can be a deciding factor. For example if you are running a 64-bit only application like Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 or later, then you'll need to go with the 64-bit version. On the other hand if you run 16-bit applications then you'll either need the 32-bit version or will want to run a 32-bit OS virtually in order to run them.

If you don't run any 64-bit only applications and if a system has 4GB or less in memory then the 32-bit version will generally run faster. If you have more than 4GB of memory then you'll need the 64-bit version to utilize it.

Finally there are drivers, which are different for the 32-bit and 64-bit versions. If you support multiple systems it can be easier to deal with one set of drivers than two sets.

Bottom line: Most people should choose the 64-bit version, however for older hardware with 4GB or less in memory, and especially if using any older 16-bit applications, then the 32-bit version would be best. Scott.

Is it true that one shouldn't buy some more memory just to run the 64-bit version, particularly if one doesn't own any software that's exclusively 64-bit?

Yes, it's all about the applications. Scott.

Should one install the 32-bit version of Windows 7 Professional if one has a lot of older devices?
