I have a friend that I always work on computers for who had someone else work on her laptop.

http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/X401A/

Apparently, this person blew away her recovery partition, and did an install of "Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601)" per Belarc Advisor.

From what I can tell, there is no longer a recovery partition. So, I'm curious how I can get her back to her factory Windows 8, as she says the system didn't come with a set of factory discs.

From what I understand about Windows 8, her product key should be embedded in the BIOS, will it be possible to do an install?

I know from experience on a Windows 7 PC, MS has OEM downloads available and you can do a telephone activation using the key on the sticker on your computer. Being this is no longer done with 8, how can I help this friend?

I'm supposed to look at her computer tomorrow.

Thanks

You'll need the Windows 8 or 8.1 installation media to do the installation. If you don't have a copy you can purchase and download it using the instructions here: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8 ... dows-8.htm

If you do the install on an OEM system that originally came with Windows 8 I believe it should automatically find the key for activation. If not you can find the key in the BIOS using the instructions here: http://www.nextofwindows.com/how-to-ret ... from-bios/

Let me know how the installation goes, Scott.

I suppose the problem lies in the fact that the person who did the Windows 7 install blew away the Recovery Partition.

So, now, even though her laptop shipped with Windows 8, since she didn't create a recovery set, the only way to get Windows 8 back on there is to "buy" another copy, even though there is a product key stored in the BIOS.

I suppose gone are the days of the Digital River links that had Windows 7 downloads, even though you needed your product key for those.

I have the laptop now, and will be checking with her to find out what she wants to do.

Thanks for the information, Scott.

So far I haven't found any Digital River type downloads for Win8 media from Microsoft like they did for Win7 and Vista. There are of course pirate download available but I can't specifically recommend those for obvious reasons. So far I've been encouraging anybody with Win8 problems to downgrade to Win7 so my Win8 reinstalls are few and far between. Scott.

Thanks very much!

I actually found a different page to download. It seems they house mainly trials and such.

When I performed the install, everything was automatic. No key was necessary and Windows was activated. And I know it's not a bootleg site so, it's all good.

This other site will be great too.

Thanks!

I've found the Windows 8 full recovery system to be very slow, I'll wager a DVD install will be faster

This particular system didn't have an optical drive.

I had to create a USB install from the .iso file.

It went pretty quick, just the updates took awhile as usual. Would like to have been able to slipstream most of them.
