Hello Scott
I have a Asus X401a Laptop here, with Win7 pre-installed
For some reason the disk lost it's partition despite the disk being mechannically fine.
I can't use the OEM recovery option and I can't get it to boot off an external ODD either (no internal ODD)
From searching and reading seems I need to play with CSM, Legacy USB boot or Uefi settings. This is an early Windows boot manager system and this bios does not have those options.
So, seems I'm stuck! I wondered about installing Win7 on as similar machine as possible and transferring the disk back across to this annoying Asus?

You might need to disable "Secure Boot" functionality if that was supported or enabled. I can't imagine a system that won't boot from USB, perhaps the system is more defective than you initially thought? I'm not sure what else I can say as I haven't used or recommended Asus products since they began using non-standard motherboard front panel connections many years ago. Scott.

Thanks Scott, luckily I was able to install Win7 on another machine and persuade the Asus to update drivers, mostly Intel, Realtek and a Ralink Wlan.
