Both of my parents have had incidents recently where the desktop PC they usually use undergoes the process of shutting down without being prompted by the user. The PC in question has a Windows Vista installation. What could be causing the unprompted shutdowns? Yes, the user does receive a message that the system is shutting down.

Software can cause the system to shut down, as can a failing power switch. Check to see what is running on the systems before the shutdown occurs, and try replacing the power switch with a known-good spare. You can also try disconnecting the switch from the motherboard after the system powers on. If the shutdown occurs after that is done then it most likely is software related. Also check the BIOS Setup for any shutdown related settings. Scott.
