Hi Scott,
Working on a Dell Power Edge SC440 wont turn on! The light on the Motherboard comes on. Things I have checked. 1. Switch Power Supply with a known good one 2. Boot Strap Unplug everything except power to the board (1) stick of memory 3. Switched the CPU
Is there a way to start this server without the i/o panel assembly, like on a regular PC Mother board were we can jump the board with a small screw driver?
I have it diagnosed too the i/o panel switch or the motherboard, the problem is I don't have a spare i/o panel to test. Is there anyway to by pass the switch any trick you may know.
Thanks, Craig

Sorry, but are you saying put or probe the ribbon cable connecter on the motherboard? If so are you jumping across two pins or farther apart pins? I ve never jump one these boards. Can you tell where and how to use the paper clip?
Thanks Craig

Well put the paper clip in the power connector and the power supply and cpu fans turns on but no video. I unplugged the front power switch and case switch before connecting the paper clip. The led light on the motherboard light amber. I was reading if I take out all memory modules that in the system it should beep consantly and if it doesn't the the motherboard is bad is that true with all motherboards? If the motherboard is shorted by way of cold solder joints, what's your thought on heating the board and the videochip see if that revives it. We fix HP DV2000-9000 video reflow the chip with heat gun all the time works 90% of the time. Whats your thought on trying to reheat the motherboard? I am thinking the motherboard is shorted but not sure were
Thanks, Craig

Power Edge SC 440 Sevice Tag: J7208F1 Express: 41786710813 MotherBoard: CN:0NY776-70821-7AH-5051
I read about the memory left out of the computer and if it doesnt beep then its bad on a forum I dont remember which one, it didnt sound right to me. I never remember you talking about that happening with memory.

OK, *now* we're getting somewhere. <g> According to the Service Tag number you provided, that system is an OptiPlex 745 that was originally sold in Brazil. I'm not sure where you are located, but most of Brazil uses 220/240VAC power. If you are using 110/120VAC, you may need to change the input voltage switch on the PSU to the 110/120VAC setting. An improper setting would result in *exactly* the symptoms you are describing. If the PSU input switch is set correctly and the system still doesn't work, then what are the status of the diagnostic LEDs on the motherboard? Note that with no memory installed, according to the diagnostic beep codes for that specific system, it will beep in a 1-3-1 through 2-4-4 pattern. Let me know what you find, Scott.

Sorry Scott,
I type the wrong tag it's J72Q8F1. The power supply is set right 115v and it test good I also tried a good know power supply still no power. When I used the paper clip to jump the board the fans in the power suppy and the cpu fan turn on and the yellow light on the motherboard. We tried new PSU and same results also switch the cpu with several different ones same no power. Pull the motherboard out of the case and tested still no power when we jump the power just the fans turn on and the motherboard light. Plus I didnt hookup the hard drive or the optical drive while testing and used 1 stick of memory to check and switched thru all memory sticks one at a time and tried different slots. What do you think motherboard bad?
Thanks, Craig

Craig, When Scott continually asks for links, this is what he is looking for: Here is a link to my PowerEdge SC440: http://support.dell.com/support/downloa ... ag=J72Q8F1Or, you can embed the link like this: Here is a link to my PowerEdge SC440With links like that, Scott is more inclined to delve deeper into answering since he doesn't have to do the legwork to find your system specs.
