I have been wanting to build a very powerful server.

I have learned in the past weeks several differences between what is needed for a Pc and what is needed for a Server.

1. It is a good idea to have ECC registered memory in a server.
2. It is almost a must to have non green non intellipower enterprise hard drives especially for RAID.

Is there anything else that is either vital or recommended for a server vs a PC?

Intel used to have a "Real Server" campaign that identified some of the differences between a server and a desktop PC. While obviously designed to sell Intel server (Xeon) processors and other components, the campaign was generally informative. Here are some documents and videos to check out:

For more information I recommend you check out Upgrading and Repairing Servers. The included video shows how to build a server from scratch. Scott.

Thank you for the response Scott

I asked the question and perhaps did not make myself clear as to what Im asking.

I would like to know is there a difference as far as the types of components or characteristics of the components that you put in a server vs a PC

Just like the harddrives and memory need to be a certain type.

If you could add anything to the list above in the first post that would be great. Sort of like

1. you also need this
2. you also need this
3. you also need this ....

The documents and video I linked to above will answer that, and you'll find even more information in the URServers book. If you check them out you'll see that you may want to choose a server processor, motherboard, and chassis/PSU to go with your ECC memory and Enterprise/RAID class drives. Scott.
