Would you recommend the Motorola SB6121 for a new DOCSIS 3.0 modem purchase?

If it has a gigabit Ethernet port then yes, else no. Scott.

Yes, it does. Do you still recommend the D-Link DIR-655?

So far, but I'm also looking into others that can run simultaneous 2.4GHz/5GHz dual-band, with separate SSIDs for each band. Other things I look for in a router/switch/access point combo include three (or more) external detachable antennas using standard connectors, gigabit Ethernet for both LAN and WAN connections, management via built-in web pages (vs. proprietary software), "guest" network capability, ports in the back/LEDs in the front, stackable shape, and powered by 12V DC with a standard barrel connector. Scott.

Are there any dual band-routers that look promising? Last I heard, you still didn't recommend them.

Sounds like you're describing an updated version of the WRT54G. Those are still very reliable routers if you can load them with custom firmware (DD-WRT or Tomato).

That was before "simultaneous dual-band" versions became available. This allows for two distinctly separate wireless access points (each with a unique SSID and on a separate band) to function within the same unit. With that type of design you can set systems use one or the other without random jumping between bands.

I was extremely fond of the WRT54G family for many years, and while I still have several around for testing and/or temporary use, they no longer meet most of my requirements and would severely limit throughput on >25Mbps broadband connections. Scott.

That is exactly why I'm upgrading the modem and router.

Hi Scott,

I've been looking for a new router. This D-Link DIR-835 seems to fit the bill as per your specifications above. Please tell me if I've missed anything and if this is one you would recommend. Thanks!

I think I would recommend it, but I haven't tested it personally. I do think it would the next one I try if any of my current routers go down. Let me know what you think if you try it. Scott.
