Scott,

What is flavor of the week when it comes to small GigE switches (4-8 ports) for office use. This would for my office, not a full LAN.

I put this list together but also so this TRENDnet that didn't seem to be on the list. But I guess you'd recommend against that one since it uses a 7.5V power adapter.

I currently use and recommend the Trendnet TEG-S580G.

The NewEgg info is incorrect, the current model uses a 5V power adapter and the unit itself draws a miniscule 3.5W (max.) of power. In normal operation neither the unit or the power adapter remain completely cool to the touch. In the past I've had several other brands of gigabit switches fail due to overheating, which is not an issue with these. Scott.

It looks like both the 5 port and 8 port versions of that switch on Newegg are not the current model. Both Newegg pages list the adapter as 7.5V with a slightly higher power consumption and the new versions also have a 8K MAC filtering table. That spec is listed as 4K for the 8 port and not listed for the 5 port (on the Newegg pages).

So...which did *you* recieve from Newegg when you ordered the Trendnet TEG-S580G, the current or old version?

Since there is a limit on how many you can order, it looks like they are running a sale to get rid of old models.

I got the current (V2.0R) version from NewEgg (ordered under that exact same NewEgg item number) over 1.5 years ago! I don't think the old version has been available since at least that time, NewEgg simply hasn't updated the page. Scott.

Any reason to go with the Trendnet over the 8 Port NETGEAR GS108 ProSafe?

Looking at a comparison it looks like the main differences are Jumbo Frame size, Buffer Memory, Power, and Warranty.

Given the mail in rebate which, at the time of this post, put's the Netgear only $5 more would you recommend it?

We've been using a few of the Trendnet switches for the past couple of years with no trouble. The Trendnet is 5 dollars less and has no mail-in rebate. I'm not a fan of rebates.

I hate rebates too...but I'm asking on behalf of the "bang for the buck people". It's really just splitting hairs. I'm going back to sleep.

Based our good experiences with these and the miniscule 3.5W (max.) power consumption I'd go with the TrendNet even if they were the same price. Scott.
