Hi and thanks

You currently have only 4 wired network connections on the back of that router. You will have a net gain of 6 more connections if you buy the switch I recommended in my last post. Set the switch under your router, run a short (1' or so) ethernet cable from any port on the router (1-4) to any port on the switch (1-8). Then you can use any of the remaining 3 ports on the router and 7 ports on the switch for any other wired network connections.
There is 1 available port (I'm holding off on the switch for now ...)

Is it possible to have the same printer be wireless for the laptops, and Ethernet for the desktops?

Yes, connect the printer via USB to any one of your desktop systems (turn off the printer's own wireless function), then share it on the network. After that, any other system on your network (whether connected via wired or wireless) will be able to print to the shared printer.
I will try that

Is this possible without configuring a network?

You already have a network. Any devices currently connected to your DIR-655 (wired or wireless) are already on your network, and you can easily add more. Scott.
I have not been having much luck with this. The printers (wireless) are EXTREMELY slow.
One of the wired PCs stopped connecting – Had to reset the router.
Is there any reason NOT to have a network (I.E. to have them separate)
I did not want to have them "communicate" to avoid problems (i.e. not connecting etc.) but this occurred anyway.
I got your book it is very good.
Thanks
