Hi Scott.

I have two computers that I tried to network over the past two weeks but has
not been successful. I constructed my own crossover cable that has been tested elsewhere and proven to be good/ well terminated at the two ends.

When connected to my two PCs with the following IP addresses 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2, the computers see themselves and not each other. I have disable all firewalls... both windows and antivirus firewalls. I'm using win XP SP2 as the OS.

Secondly Folder option in my computer has disappeared. And also task manager has been disabled. Not forgetting the last one: I cannot access device manager from the properties of computer. How all these things happen I cannot tell. I need assistance. Thank you very much.

The detailed instructions in this 8-part article will show you how to connect two systems directly via several different physical methods, including a crossover cable:

Your problems with missing Folder Options, Task Manager, etc. are normally caused by malware making changes to your registry in order to make removal more difficult. There is a tool that can undo some of these settings, however until you actually remove the malware, you're likely to have the problems surface again, along with many other problems as well.

For dealing with malware, see my post here: viewtopic.php?p=1287#1287
