Scott, I have a PC game designed for Windows 95 that will not work with Windows XP or Vista. Is there any software for XP or Vista that will make the game think that it's being used with Windows 95?

Unfortunately, Mr. McMahon, when one inserts the first disc for the game in question, it needs Windows 95 right off the bat.

In that case all you need is a Virtual PC running Windows 95. Let me know how that works for you. Scott.

It seems I need Windows 7 to run the latest version of Virtual PC. I don't have Windows 7.

Well, there's . Something on reads: "Running Windows Vista or Windows XP? Learn more about Virtual PC 2007." For the latest version of Virtual PC, it is that the host operating system be some edition of Windows 7. Since I don't have Windows 7 in any form, I believe I should get Virtual PC 2007 since I have both XP and Vista.
Good enough?

Judging from what I've read, Virtual PC 2007 will work on Windows XP Professional but not on Windows Vista Home Premium. Also, Virtual PC 2007 doesn't support Windows 95, but Virtual PC 2004 does. Unfortunately, I've had trouble installing Windows 95 on a virtual hard drive associated with Virtual PC 2004. I can start a virtual machine, but I've had issues with both a physical installation disc and an ISO file. It seems like it won't book from an optical-disc drive. Can you please help me out?

I've uninstalled Virtual PC 2004 and reinstalled Virtual PC 2007. I've tried using an ISO file, but to no avail.

Scott, I've tried to install Windows 95 using ISO files on two different PCs with Virtual PC 2007 installed on them (one with XP, the other with Vista). So far, no luck. Am I supposed to capture ISO files using Virtual PC?

I think you need to mount the *.iso as a drive using Demon tools or similar

Scott, I successfully managed to install Windows 95 on a virtual hard drive created with Virtual PC 2007, but when I tried to install the troublesome game Byzantine: The Betrayal on said virtual hard drive, I got multiple blue screens. (It goes without saying that each blue screen was a BSOD.) Below is a link to a page on Amazon.com about the game:
After reading to my dad a certain review of the game that expressed frustration, he basically agreed with me about getting rid of it. We probably shouldn't donate it to Goodwill since there are apparently very few PCs that run Windows 95 these days.

Maxi, if you can wing it, scrape up old parts and slapup a pure Win95 box.
At home I got the fixins for a few old OS's. I have one box running pure DOS ... 256MB SDRAM, Athalon XP, old MSI 6378 board with onboard Trident video (slow 3D but very fast 2D chip that I talk to with my old Fortran).
I got stuff for other boxes -- not running -- that I get second hand. Several AMD Semperons and some (not quite as old) MSI boards, with old AGP video cards.
Any old CRT monitor, beatup keyboard, wired PS2 mouse would work, just like back in the day. Sometimes I still play Master Of Orion 1 from 1995. Still the *best* PC game out there.
But *totally* unlike how these old boxes came to me, I do spend money on a very good power supply for these old setups.

Scott, I tried stuff mentioned on that page you linked to. The game installed OK. Unless my memory fails, I didn't know XP had a compability mode. I knew Vista did, but...
