A Windows error with Event ID 1003 is a kernel crash (the kernel is the core
of the Windows OS). That's like the engine blowing up in your car. <g> If
that happened to you and you asked me "why did my engine blow up?" I'd have
to say "Well, there are easily a hundred or more things that could have
caused that to happen." If you wanted a better answer, you'd have to bring
your car to my shop so I could dissasemble it and check it over thoroughly.
A kernel crash has about the same severity, except the potential causes could
number in the thousands or more, and be either hardware related, software
related, or both. I often find spontaneous reboots caused by hardware
problems including:
-Power supply
-Memory
-Motherboard
-Processor
-Heat sinks or fans (overheating)
-Video card
-Disk drive (any)
-Improper BIOS Setup settings (esp. overclocking)
-Anything else plugged into the motherboard
-Loose screws (causing bad grounds or shorts)
-Excessive dust/dirt
-Wall outlet wiring/grounding/voltage
-Overloaded circuits (brownouts, spikes, dips, etc.)
-ESD (static)
-Local RF transmissions (2-way radios, phones, etc.)
I could go on but the list could be several pages long, and that's just
looking at hardware, and your problem could also be caused by any number of
software issues. MS has a list of related problems here:

As you can see from looking at that site, many potential software related
causes are malware related. Most if not all of of these would be solved by a
clean install of XP w/SP2 and all updates since.
With automobiles, in some cases it is cheaper, easier and faster to just
install a rebuilt engine without ever figuring out exactly why the original
one failed. For the same reason, I often recommend simply doing a clean
install of Windows, or replacing any suspect hardware with known-good spares.
Let me know if you figure out the cause and solution, Scott.
PS: If you know the answer to something, I would definitely encourage you to
reply on the forum. I want as many people to participate as possible!
